Preliminary setup involves cleansing and shaving the area to be treated. An intense pulse of light and heat is then directed toward the area. Without damaging the surrounding tissue, controlled pulses of light penetrate the skin and get preferentially absorbed by hair follicles. The heat generated in the process destroys the hair follicle and its potential for regrowth. After treatment, a high quality skin moisturizer and sunblock are applied. Smaller facial areas like the upper lip, chin, and beard can be treated in minutes. Larger areas such as those found on the back, shoulders, abdomen, and legs take longer.
