Acne
Acne, one of the most common skin diseases, is characterized by increased oiliness, redness, blackheads, whiteheads, red swellings and pustules (pimples). Affecting especially the middle of the face, this blemish cannot be easily disguised. Although acne can occur at any age, it is most common from the mid-teens to mid-twenties, causing embarrassment and even loss of self esteem.

Although mild cases may resolve spontaneously or with over the counter lotions, the more severe the acne and the longer the duration, the higher is the chance of permanent scarring. Many patients continue with acne despite prescription treatments such as vitamin A derivatives or antibiotics.

Light therapy has proven to be a breakthrough in the management of acne. Broad spectrum intense light is administered in a very brief flash. Given with supplementary heat (LHE- light heat energy), the green light acts on porphyrins produced by the P. acnes bacterium causing death of the bacterium. Also the heat damages the sebaceous (fat) cells. The outcome is a remarkable and long-term improvement in acne.

Scarring from acne requires more intensive and long term treatment to achieve significant improvement.
