FotoFacial®
What is FotoFacial®?
FotoFacial® is a series of Intense Pulsed Light treatments that improve the appearance of flushing, sun damaged skin, age spots, and skin texture. This exciting treatment involves "no down time". You can resume normal activities immediately.

How does the treatment work?
An intense light is applied in a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area. Without damaging the skin, the light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by the abnormally dilated vessels or pigmentation. The heat impairs the vessel or lesion, and the body begins its natural healing process. The lesion will darken before it flakes off or is absorbed by the body. Treatment can be given as frequently as every three weeks.

How many treatments will I need?
For optimal results, a series of 5 treatments are recommended. Some patients see significant improvement in 2 to 3 treatments; others require more. Maintenance treatments may be recommended to maintain results.

What are the benefits of FotoFacial®?
  • All patients observe smoother skin with visible improvement in irregular pigmentation
  • Improve flushing and redness
  • Each treatment takes twenty minutes, requires only a topical anesthesia
  • Minimal discomfort during treatment
  • Resume regular activities immediately

What is a treatment like?
Treatment may vary from 15 to 45 minutes depending on the size of the area to be treated. First, the treated area is cleansed and a cool gel is applied. When the pulse of light is delivered, the sensation is similar to a snap of a rubber band. After treatment, the gel is removed, the skin cleansed, and a sunscreen is applied. Pain is minimal; however, topical anesthesia can be used for maximum comfort. For sensitive skin, a cool compress is applied following treatment.

Are there any possible side effects?
Side effects are rare. Immediately following treatment, the skin may appear flushed, brown pigmented spots may appear darker, and capillaries may be more visible. In rare instances, temporary swelling and/or blistering can occur.

What improvement will I see?
Patients have a high degree of satisfaction with their results. Expect to see a gradual decrease in redness, broken capillaries, flushing and irregular pigmentation. After each treatment, the skin will feel smoother and appear to have a more even tone.

Chemical Peels
Chemical Peels are increasingly popular with those who are unhappy about sun-damaged skin, age spots, freckles, fine lines, rough skin, and uneven pigmentation.

What is a Chemical Peel?
Men and women alike share a common desire to have healthy, youthful skin. Exposure to the sun and the elements in combination with adverse habits contribute to the appearance of our skin. Chemical Peels are increasingly popular with those who are unhappy about acne, sun-damaged skin, age spots, freckles, fine lines, rough skin, and uneven pigmentation. A Chemical Peel is not limited to the face, and can be performed on the neck, chest, hands, arms, shoulders, and legs-just about anywhere!

What is a Chemical Peel?
Chemical Peels are topically applied acids that aid in the restoration and rejuvenation of the skin's surface. They create a uniform and controlled shedding of several layers of the skin. Depending on the nature and depth of the peel, a significant number of layers can be exfoliated allowing new growth to be exposed, creating a fresh vibrant appearance.

Who are candidates?
Your skin type and the results you are aspiring to achieve will determine if you are a candidate, as well as which class of peel is most appropriate for you.

What are the benefits of a Chemical Peel?
Chemical Peels can enhance your appearance by reducing blotchy and uneven pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, freckling, age spots, sun-damaged skin, and acne in a relatively brief measure of time. Chemical Peels accelerate the production of new cells. Enjoy fresh smooth skin-immediately after your first treatment!

What are the side effects?
Chemical Peels have become increasingly popular because of the array of advantages and relative lack of complications. Side effects are rare and usually temporary. Some side effects include uneven pigmentation, redness, and very infrequent scarring if the skin is not cared for appropriately. Sun protection is crucial to minimize the risk of side effects. A treatment program of individually suited products and sun protection will benefit your skin's ability to maintain the results of the peel. You can decrease the likelihood of side effects by carefully following the instructions of your treatment provider.

Types of Chemical Peels:
Chemical Peels are classified as superficial, medium, and deep peels.
  • Superficial Peel - This peel is designed to help smooth coarse skin, improve the texture of sun-damaged skin, even out skin tone, and used as an adjuvant to acne treatments. The recovery is generally rapid and usually involves some minor flaking. A series of treatments is ordinarily recommended to obtain the desired result over a period of time. Typically, there is no down time and with appropriate sun protection, you can resume regular activities immediately.

  • Medium Peel - Medium peels contain a stronger potency of acids. Medium peels target the epidermis and upper dermis and cause the skin to slough within 5 to 7 days. Immediately after treatment the skin has a red appearance and is occasionally accompanied by swelling. Within a day the skin turns brown in color, and after 3 or 4 days the skin initiates the peeling process.

  • Deep Peel - Deep peels produce the most dramatic results. This peel is recommended for treating wrinkles, scars, blemishes and, in some cases, precancerous skin lesions. A deep peel targets the dermis. In some cases, anesthesia is required during the procedure to reduce the warm to hot stinging sensation. After a deep peel, the skin is red and can result in some swelling and blistering. A crust may form and the skin will turn brown just prior to peeling. Many layers of the skin will peel over a period of 1 to 2 weeks. An ointment may be given to keep the area moist. Temporarily, the new skin will have the color and sensation of significant sunburn, which will gradually fade to your normal skin color.

Acne Treatments

Acne is a common medical condition that affects nearly 100 percent of adolescents and 12% of adults at some point in their lives. Adult onset acne has become a growing concern for people in their 20's, 30's, and 40's. Although acne is not a grave disease, it can leave permanent scarring on the skin, and negatively impact an individual's self-esteem.

Acne is one of the most common of all skin problems, characterized by whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and, in some people, deep painful bumps that look and feel like boils. When it's severe, acne can cause permanent scarring of the skin. And those are just the physical problems.

What are the treatment options?
There are many treatment options available. During your consultation, we can discuss what options will best suit your needs.

Treatments may include any of the following:
  • Chemical Peels: This involves a uniform and controlled shedding of skin layers using a topically applied exfoliating solution. The number of layers to be exfoliated and solution strength will depend on the nature and depth of treatment required. Damaged, outer layers of the skin are removed exposing the soft, clear, and radiant underlying skin.

  • Microdermabrasion: A stream of very fine crystals is sprayed through a handpiece across the skin, mixing gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of the skin. These tiny crystals act as an exfoliant to remove the dead skin cells and promote the production of new cells and collagen to even out skin texture and tone. Improvements in appearance and texture will occur with successive treatments.

  • Acne Surgery: Blackheads and whiteheads (closed and open comedomes) are precursor lesions that lead to the more visible red bumps and pus bumps of acne. Dr. Carr and her staff will manually extract these lesions as a part of your acne care resulting in a clearer skin sooner.
Combinations of many oral topical medications are available to treat acne. During your consultation, we will work with you to determine the right course of action and regimen that's best for you.
